More Couples Jump Into Homeownership Before Marriage


They may not be ready to commit to forever, but increasingly more couples are comfortable with jumping into a 30-year mortgage. According to a recent RISMedia article, over the last 20 years realtors have seen a dramatic shift in the marital status of buyers. Based on the Current Population Survey published by the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of cohabiting unmarried partners has increased by 88 percent from 1990 to 2007. Rachel Drew, a researcher at Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, is cited in the article saying, “The decline in married couples, among younger buyers, is almost entirely offset by growth in unmarried couples. They are much more likely than a single person to buy a home. They’re acting like married couples.”
